Training Day 6

Gaming: Today was my D&D game so I did a whole lot of nothing. My DM, the Momrine, suddenly got a whole lot more lethal today and killed two of our characters then nearly killed me. Urgh. All in all, it was a fun day.

Training Day 5

At some point I am going to have to write some spiel about why this blog is called what it is... but for now, more of the same.

Language: Today was such a slow day. Slooooooow. Still, I managed to make it through intact despite getting the run around from the people at the ID shop and choking when I tried to speak in front of the class. Actually, that's not such a bad thing. I think it shows everyone that I'm not a natural born linguist and that rolling back didn't make me smarter somehow. They seem to think I only do well in class because I rolled back yet today I stumbled all over early vocabulary that they knew but I wasn't taught in my new class. Also, my MLI asked me about my CPAP machine as my face has the lines on it from the full face mask. As that discussion took place with no prompting in the class, I am hoping it helps my classmates realize that I actually have a legitimate medical problem and didn't roll back just for giggles.

Marathon: The baby was really sick today so the Momrine had to pick her up from daycare again. Then we went to go pick up my car so no running today... I'm a bit disappointed but these things happen and you can't dwell on missed opportunities. We just have to push harder on the next run.

Automotive: I got my car back today! It's still making some of those scraping sounds but it is also a lot better and seems to be riding smoother... still, I was hoping there would be no scraping sounds after $1200 worth of repairs at the discounted family rate and being two weeks late. At least I have my primary means of transportation (besides my legs) back. Time to kick off more training with the increased mobility!

Personal: There's a few things rattling around in my head right now. They are a bit heavy so I'm keeping them under wraps for now. All I can do is do my best with what I have available. All things turn out as they should in the end as long as I keep working at it even if the outcome isn't what I thought would be the best outcome.

Training Day 4

Language: Today was a pretty uneventful day. I went to class, studied my vocab, and set up speaking practice for every Tuesday after class. That and the fact that tomorrow is Friday are about the only noteworthy things as far as my language goes. At least I am still enjoying class and feeling like I am learning a lot. Today I was grouped with the smart kids, which is nice.

Marathon: Today the Momrine and I went for our first run together. Unfortunately, my platoon sprang a SRB update me this afternoon so we started late and, rather than run the 3 mi course we had anticipated, ran for about 30 minutes around the neighborhoods near the daycare before we picked her daughter up. That's all we had time for but it's better than nothing. It was a slow pace - easy for me but the Momrine was suffering. She finished it up strong, however, and that is the important thing. The hardest part is just getting out there and running so if she can keep that up I know we will finish this marathon. I can't wait until the conditioning kicks in.

Automotive: I was hoping to pick up my car today but Toyota ordered the wrong bolts to hold the wheel to the axle so I am still grounded. Hopefully it will be ready by tomorrow so that I can pick it up and get on with my life as there is way too much I can not do with my limited mobility. I need to be able to go where I want, when I want in order to get the most out of my day. Also, my vehicle is a lot more people-friendly than the Momrine's is.

Gaming: Today I tried to write some of the narrative my DM charged me to write about Vestein and his interactions with Lady Marcia before he left Shadowdale. I don't do too well with 'write on command' but I had to try and I made some progress.

Training Day 3

Language: Class rocked today. Class has been rocking pretty hard ever since I was rolled back but today was especially fun. Yesterday I had mentioned wanting to move my seat to my class leader because I was stuck between the loud goofballs in my class while the quiet, studious people were on the other side of the room. Today another classmate must have annoyed my class leader for the last time because he switched our seats. Doing group work with him is pretty intense but fun and I think I rose to the occasion. We were bouncing back sentences to each other with the new grammar pattern and I actually found myself explaining a few things to him. This is a huge improvement over knowing nothing and suffering through every moment of every day.

Tonight's homework consisted of five sentences apiece for each of the three new grammar patterns. Then I finished creating the flashcards for all the bonus words the teachers gave me and reviewed all of the next chapter's vocab. Pretty light stuff but I'm learning more and more words. I found my Rosetta Stone CD while cleaning today so now I have that to help me study too. I think the voice recognition software will be useful for pronunciation as mine sucks.

Marathon: Today the Momrine and I were supposed to run a 3mi but her charge (the baby) is sick. She's a tough little baby but the pukes at daycare are not. So the Momrine was called home to watch her little one and, without a sitter, we had to do individual training. I went for a 30 minute run on post from my barracks to the hilltop field, ran around the track, ran down to the PFC, ran around the track, ran back to the hilltop field, ran around the track, then ran back to my barracks. It was a nice, easy pace and I ran for 9 minutes then walked for 1 like I will in the marathon. My new shoes felt really good compared to my old running shoes (which were a whole size too small) but I still need to break them in. More importantly, today I upheld my commitment to start training despite the lack of a partner. As long as I keep my motivation and dedication high, I'll do this. It felt good to boot. I think that is because I was properly rested, hydrated, and fed.

Combat: I like to think that everything happens for a reason. Some people may think it's nonsense but, besides my thinking it's true, it makes me really thankful for the little things in life. Like today. I could have been all bummed out that the Momrine and I didn't run together but because I was running solo on post I came across my Marine Corps Martial Arts Program instructor testing out some Marines. I thought he had already left the post so imagine my surprise when I found out he would be here until March. Now I have the opportunity to get my MCMAP grey belt. Time to dig up the syllabuses and remediate...

Personal: Today I spent a chunk of time cleaning up my room by going through my bins and drawers and getting rid of stuff. I also found a lot of stuff too. Once I did that I had room to store the other stuff a lot better so my room is less of a wreck. It's still a bit of a mess but it is getting better. I can't wait to get this done so that I can devote these energies to some other goal.

Gaming: I found a bunch of games and CDs while cleaning and proceeded to install a few games and rip the CDs. Then I played some Baldur's Gate. Right now I am mopping up the gnoll stronghold before heading back out to scour the countryside for evil. Mmmm... Thank you GameTap.

Training Day 2

I am taking a page from my friend's blog (http://crazy4marathoning.blogspot.com/) and writing down my training efforts. If you look up, you'll see that my blog is starting on the second training day. This is because somebody neglected to tell me that we started training on Monday with a bit of cross-training. Oh well. Tomorrow I shall have my revenge with our first 3 mile run. Mwaha.

For now I'll be titling this posts on Marathon Time (MT). This all started because my friend (I am going to borrow from another friend of mine and dub the first friend "The Mom-rine") asked me to run a marathon with her. Sure! Why not? It's not like I have anything better to do than train for 16 weeks leading up to a 26.2 mile run. Besides, I get a nifty medal at the end of it all to flash at anyone who asks me why I'm dead on my feet the next day (being Monday).

Seriously. It should be fun and I'm looking forward to the experience, the bragging rights, and the high level of fitness that makes it all possible. 300 PFT here I come!

However, while this blog will be on MT, it won't just be about the marathon. I'm working on a lot of different projects to try and better myself. I agree with Sir Charny that prowess is the cornerstone of chivalry and, as such, need to be better at what I do. I also think that a true gentleman warrior needs to be diverse so I'll be rambling on here about my language training, military education, college education, weight lifting, running, study of the science of ass-kickery, spiritual studies, dancing, drawing, guitar playing, and whatever else I happen to pick up. Now, that's a lot so I won't be writing about all of it all the time. I still need to develop my gaming skills too.

Language: I received the scores to my first test in my new class! 96 (A-) in reading, 96 (A) in listening, and a B+ in speaking. This is a vast improvement over failing. Thank you very much Dr. Heal for diagnosing me, Advantacare for supplying the gear, and Tri-West for footing the bill! I actually like studying now, depraved as that sounds, so today I did six homework book exercises and worked on my daily vocab practice. This morning I had speaking practice too.

Marathon: As I mentioned above, this is technically the second training day). I used it to get new running shoes from Fleet Feet as my previous ones were too small, too tight, beat up, and blister-inducing. On the inside of the arches of my feet no less. Tomorrow, I really start training by leading the Momrine on a 3 mile run. Now, I can run a 3 mile no problem and do it every so often. The Momrine, however, is just now getting off of her pregnancy no-PT chit... It'll be fun. I hope she's hydrated.
