Training Day 83

Language: I dabbled. Then I ran into one of my teachers out in town.

Marathon: Woo! Today was my first run with my new running club and it was amazing. I kicked it off at 0715 and didn't stop running until 1035. At first I really didn't know how far or how fast I was going to run but, after trying out a couple of groups, I fell in with a lady runner and decided to see just how far I could push myself. Besides running a full 20 (!) miles at about 10 minutes per mile, I realized two truths about runners:

They are generally some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Everyone I met was extraordinarily polite and helpful. I was running (literally) up to perfect strangers and engaging in conversation. Some of it was quite interesting and meaningful... For example, the lady I wound up running with is pursuing her Master's in international negotiation specializing in narcotics enforcement. Yeah. That's awesome. She also gave me a power bar, some of her sports drink, this weird post-race stuff to help me feel better, lots of good pointers (such as turning my feet in to give myself a break on hills and the benefits of power walking at certain points), and her number if I have any future questions.

I know a few of you are snickering at the idea of my having a lady's number. Let me assure you that as she is not only dating a Naval officer but is leaving in five weeks, that number is only for running help. Still... To meet a perfect stranger and chat for a good three hours is no small feat, I think.

Runners are also some of the most attractive people I've ever found. Seriously. There was one woman who I would have pegged at late 30s or so... Nope. She was in her 60s. You could tell she was aged, sure, but she was still attractive. I guess that is what happens when you take care of your body the good old-fashioned way: Eating right and making it work! Then all the ones who were closer to my age (as opposed to my grandmother's)... Yeah.

Anyways... At the end of it all walking was extremely painful but I felt good. I pushed myself a full six miles longer than my previous running time under less than optimal circumstances. I pushed myself through not one but three cramps in my calves. Now I need to taper off to prepare for the marathon in three weeks but if I could add six miles today then I can definitely add six miles for the marathon. For the marathon I'll be loaded with the right chow and properly hydrated too.

I feel alive!

Personal: So I ran a bunch of errands today. Ho-hum. Then the Momrine invited me to her house to hang out but I went out with a couple Marines instead. It started as my giving one a ride to the commissary to pick up some rice. We met another Marine there (who is absolutely adorable... she's like the little sister of my platoon) then we all went to one of the local Asian markets and raided their snack supplies. I picked up some sodas that the Hooah really likes as the store easily had two or three dozen.

But not before taking a cellphone picture and mocking her with the "only" soda that I "drank."

After the market raid we went to a restaurant. Poor guy... My friend was totally chowing down. I felt daring today and ordered fish. Then re-learned that this particular style of cuisine doesn't believe in deboning the fish. I wasn't too keen of the mass of bean sprouts or the sauce either. The adorable Marine didn't much like her tofu. The appetizer was awesome, fortunately, and the food did smell really good. I'll probably go back later.

Then it was back to base (after an unsuccessful hunt for a Wii) to wrap up some more personal stuff.

Training Day 82

Language: I actually woke up rested today, which was nice, so the first half of class was good. The second half? Not so much. Still pulled through it, of course. I've been noticing that I am having an easier and easier time of actually thinking things in my target language.

Fitness: Det run today!

Military: That's right. A detachment run. Master Guns gathers all the Marines he can finds and leads us on a motivated cadence run all over the base. Today, a lot of my new NCOs tried singing cadence... and they sucked. This is also our first run since our platoon ballooned so it's harder to hear things. Fortunately, a couple of our star singers started up and I blew out my voice during a rousing rendition of "Delayed Cadence." Mmmmm... Today was also unique in that we really, really made Master Guns mad. That is rare and it's my platoon commander's doing. He had one of our Corporals grab our guidon and run around the detachment formation. A couple other guidon bearers gave chase... Well. It turns out that Master Guns considers such shenanigans to be a personal insult to his running speed. He assures us he can do faster. Anyways, as he was mad we had a quick little run but it was still a good one.

Oh. Today I also re-ordered my MCIs so that I can take the tests.

Apartment: Still no word on the apartment...

Gaming: Tinkered with the LotR Online today. No good. I didn't even make it two hours before realizing this wasn't even fun enough to begin justifying wasting that much time not training.

Personal: Some more things have been clicking on my head and I'm starting to shift gears back into overdrive. That's always good. In addition, today I e-mailed the secretary of my local masonic lodge. We'll see what happens with that.

Training Day 81

Language: Ugh... Bad day today. Interrupted by medical and I was really dragging this afternoon. I barely managed to get all my homework done in time too. We have a new teacher in my class too and her teaching style is taking some getting used to... It's not bad. Just different. However, once again, my classmates are complaining. I think she'll be a good teacher if we just try.

Apartment: Today at 1700 was the deadlined for applications for the apartment. Here goes!

Medical: I had one of my appointments today... It ended with a referral to an podiatrist to look at my feet, a referral to an ENT doctor to have my tonsils checked out, and a request to return on Monday for an IT band. The IT band is to help control my Ilio Tibial Band Syndrome... it's the same injury that took me out in boot camp. I found out later that it's linked to hypoglycemia and, lo' and behold, when I started up morning PT again, my injury started creeping back in. I'm hoping that once I get the hypoglycemia under control that I can tune my body so well that the ITBS goes away. I'm also helping my running club will have some pointers.

Marathon: Speaking of the running club, they returned my e-mails today. I'm going to call them tomorrow for more details but I'm excited about this.

Automotive: The autoport finally called me about a replacement tire for my car... Of course I'm too poor right now for it. I need to watch my money until I get this apartment thing squared away and can feed myself. Yay.... A note to my family: I'm eating three solid meals a day. Don't worry. I still have a buffer for that.

Personal: So, last night's big mess? The Momrine was using the Hooah as an excuse to flip out so I talked to the Hooah about it. We sneaked into the library right before closing (they started ringing a gong at us until we left) then went out for pizza and ice cream and just chatted... Hashed it all out. It was remarkably simple, actually. "Hey, what happened? Oh, crud. Well... Oh, you know already? Okay. Cool. So, how are you?" I really appreciate having one good friend through all this. Now if I could just figure out how I managed to pull that off...

But. Seriously! Behold the amazing powers of personal communication!

Training Day 80

Wednesday...

Language: I'm not sure why but class really is getting lackluster. And I'm having a harder time staying awake but I do stand up so we're okay. I don't know what's up... I'm hoping I can sort it out this weekend and recuperate. Oh, wait! I have morning runs on both days. Hrm.

Apartment: I faxed in my application today. I hate filling these things out... I can't re-use them and they ask for so much bizarre, personal information. I'm a little worried about how I stack up to the other people who were looking at the apartment. The owner told me that he is going to pick the top 5 and then meet with us at the condo for an interview and to collect the money for the credit check. My credit check money and holding deposits are sitting restlessly in my wallet.

Fitness: So... One of my new Corporals decided to completely undermine his own authority by leading us in the most retarded PT session ever. We seriously had to scoot across half the field for an exercise. Maybe his goal was camaraderie through shared misery and complaining... I'm not sure. It was horrific. Especially since I had to drag my PT gear through deer feces and our washers are all broken.

Military: See above. Another entry for my "things I won't do as an NCO" logbook.

Personal: Geez! So, today, the Momrine tried to pick a fight with me. Fortunately, I've learned well enough to just disengage and disregard when that happens. I'll have to see what happened tomorrow when things are less heated but that was a nasty sight to see.

Training Day 79

Tuesday... Yeah. Really late. Life's been crazy.

Language: More of the same. Really. I've been having a really hard time meeting with my speaking partner with all the scheduling madness...

Apartment: WOW. I stumbled across an amazingly cool apartment today. So cool in fact that, despite my best efforts to jump on it, there was such a glut of applications that it's going to be a while to go through them all. I even tried to put a $200 holding deposit down. Regardless... The apartment is cheaper than that other one I wanted, is 680 square feet, has a fireplace, a tub, a patio, a covered garage, is closer to base.... It's very nice. The owner's son is in the Navy so when I explained to him my military situation he seemed to understand.

Fitness: I went for a little stairs run today. Good PT.

Personal: The Hooah and I made a craft run today. She went to pick up cross-stitching stuff and while, originally, I wasn't going to get something I went and bought a bunch of origami stuff. Oh well. Origami, illustration, calligraphy... my hobbies are paper. They compliment one another! We got lost on the way back but it was nice to hang out with a friend.

02 April 2007

Training Day 78

Language: These quizzes are really getting frustrating. I know the words. That isn't the problem. The problem lies in the teachers creating these really complex sentences using grammar and vocabulary we've never learned then making them count for 30 points out of a 102 point test. I'm getting better at working my way around complex ideas but it still sucks. Then tonight I had to do some writing about class break.

Apartment: After a couple weeks of searching for an apartment, I am shifting gears. There are numerous rooms for rent that are nicer, closer to base, and much cheaper. I can move in with some roomies and give myself a $400+ raise. That's a lot. Also, all these rooms are available immediately and it is easier to negotiate things with individuals as opposed to companies. Individuals are willing to wiggle more. There are many rooms available too... I just need to find the right one.

There is a challenge in finding good roommates but if I find them, they may even help me expand my circle of friends and get out into the world more. That would be nice. Unfortunately, the whole 'sharing' thing does complicate my desire to acquire live steel swords and assorted firearms for training. Then again, with the extra money, I can actually afford it. Hrm.

Automotive: I tried to start my car today. It didn't like that. Three times. Finally, after the third jump start, I drove it down to a Kragen's. There I spent a little over $100 on a new batter, new protectors, and new jump cables (so I wouldn't have to borrow someone else's again). Now the car is working. Easy fix! I really appreciate how much help the clerk there gave me (right at closing too) and, of course, the military discount.

Military: Two new Gunnery Sergeants, one new Sergeant, three new Corporals, and the usual mess of Lance Corporals and Private First Classes were promoted today. As those new Corporals were just a fraction of the new ones in my particular MOS, it is going to be a while before I am pinned. I'll be ready.

Personal: Fear me, world.

"Ok, let's go to work!"
"Who the f*** are you?!"
"The workaholic!"

Bonus points to anyone who gets the reference.

Training Day 77

Sunday...

Language: I prepared for my quiz tomorrow.

Marathon: I spoke with the Hooah's mom, who has run several marathons, and she recommended that I look for a local running club. Fortunately, there is such a local running club (online even!) and some of it's members are organizers for the big marathon. I'm hoping to run with the group on Wednesday and kick it off from there.

Military: So on the really long car ride today back to base I read the entirely of Blackhawk Down. It was a good book. It showed things from multiple perspectives and did a good job providing background for what was going on at any particular moment. I can't say the pacing was off because the book is a retelling of an actual event but I can say that some of the extra commentary seemed really out of place. Most of it did an excellent job of establishing how everyone involved was a person and not a statistic.

From a military standpoint, there were several lessons to be learned here. Many of them had to do with the importance of bringing all your gear and obeying protocol rather than being cocky and winging it. The relationships between different units was interesting. There were even some practical tidbits in there for your average ground pounder to use. However, I think the really fascinating bit was watching how the different international factions and big wigs responded.

They won the battle. Unequivocally. When you accomplish all your mission objectives and the casualty ratio is, conservatively, 27 of theirs dead for every 1 of yours, you've done well. However... the American public had lost it's stomach for casualties. Politicians were worried about their polls sliding and looked for scapegoats. Therefore, rather than press the advantage that America had won through that battle, the politicians abandoned the war. I think that would be the most tragic bit of everything: To just throw away everything those soldiers had fought and died for. We still haven't learned the value of waging an all-out war and seeing it through to the end...

Also interesting was how the Somalians, despite getting the Americans and UN to leave the country, ultimately lost. Without the American muscle, the UN was ineffectual (as always). When the UN left, there was no one left to try and help Somalia rise out of Third World status with a functional government. The Somalians all thought the world was still waiting with baited breath to see what happened to their little country when in reality the world had moved on in a matter of weeks and left them to their own self-destructive devices.

Whoops.

Now that I have read every book on the Commandant's Reading List for Private through Lance Corporal I can now focus on my MCIs... or read other books. I already have a few in mind. Then I can always start on the Corporal list.

By the way... I hate the Army's bureaucratic BS. Besides reading about just how much it screws troops during wars, it also screws my friends when they are sick. I guess I'm just too used to the Marine philosophy of "Just get it done."

Personal: I had a really good talk with the Hooah's mom this morning. I enjoy talking to my elders and it's even better when they can witness a situation and comment on it without being directly involved. It helps things make sense. She had a lot to say that I'm applying to my life now and I think it's going to work out for the best.

Really long car ride today... Really long. Thankfully, I had my book so it wasn't too miserable. However, the Hooah still got really sick half way through it. She's been sick for over a week now and it caught up with her today in a really bad way. In a "I can't get my eyes to roll out of my head" sort of way and I was the only one providing care. Fortunately, she started feeling better when I got some water into her and then I made sure she got back to her barracks and the attention of her on-guard soldiers. I wanted to take her to the hospital for acute dehydration, malnourishment, and a fever but the Army doesn't like anything that breaks the routine.

Yes. I am annoyed. For various reasons. And I've determined that it is time to just assault through.

Training Day 76

Language: Knocked out my homework (9 sentences using new grammar) and reviewed vocab. That's all.

Marathon: So... I didn't run today. Yes, that makes me 0/2 races. Yes, that means I blew another entry fee... But if I ran today it would only have been to satisfy my pride. Something more important than that came up. I'm also chalking this up to experience: Don't plan Saturday races in far-away places. At least the marathon is local and I am the only deciding factor.

Medical: Those eye drops seem to be working. Yay.

Personal: So today I went to the beach... It was the first time I've been to a decent beach in years. It was wonderful. I threw myself into the waves and let the ocean take my cares away. Sadly, the effect doesn't last for too long. Especially when the things that are bothering me are being constantly reinforced. After the beach we chilled around the house for a bit... I had a nice evening chatting with the Hooah's parents. It's funny. Every time I go to a friend's house, I wind up winning over the parents. The Momrine said that her dad didn't like anyone but I got along great with him. The Hooah says it's a bit frightening that I've already won the seal of approval from her parents... The last person to do that is now the 'favorite child' and that was a few years ago... It makes me happy that the older generations appreciate me and I'm not even trying anything.

Tonight everyone also made me stop being helpful. They chased me out of the kitchen as they set the table and then again when they cleaned up. I had been cooking and cleaning throughout the day. It was actually nice. I just sat down and chatted with the Hooah's parents and one of her best friends. I had been doing that most of the evening but it was particularly enjoyable to sit down after a good meal and have a good conversation.
